Installing a mains connection?
The sheet is supplied with a 12 ft cable and a white (UK) or black (EU) mains connection plug. The plug accepts the 4 mm Earthing connection (don't try too fit it to other connections which are a quite different shape!). Connect to the sheet, run the cable, plug into the mains earth adapter, plug the adapter into the wall. The power can be on or off: it does not matter in principle. However we suggest it should be switched off.
Installing an Earthing rod system?
There are two connection cables: a 12 ft one that connects to the sheet and a 40 ft one that connects to the Earthing rod. It is good to make the connection between the two indoors. Connect the 12 ft cable to the sheet and run to near the window. Open the window and feed the rod cable through the bottom corner of the window on the hinge side. The cable is small (2 m diameter) and has very robust stainless wiring inside (it is plastic coated on the outside). It will not be damaged by a closed window. The small cable diameter means that most windows will close without damage to the cable or window. Many windows have a plastic sealing surround that will mould around the cable. Insert the 3 mm diameter (1 foot long) rod into the earth (plant pots don't work!). If your area is paved then you can either poke the rod down through the mortar or drill a small hole for the rod to go through - it just needs some part to be in contact with continuous earth.
